Jess Wheeler 27 year old Pharmacist writes about her exercise success with type 1 diabetes and better HbA1c levels with help from exT1D.
Jess Wheeler age 27, T1D 14 years reaches new exercise heights
My name is Jess and I am a 27 years old Pharmacist who has lived with Type 1 for the past 14 years. The first 13 years I struggled to get my blood glucose levels stable especially when exercising. 18 months ago I swapped to an Insulin Pump which gave me much better control overall except when I exercised. My levels were unpredictable and made exercising a burden. Bike riding and running would cause hypos, bootcamp and kickboxing would do the opposite and make me spike afterwards and then give me delayed onset hypos in the afternoon.
“My diabetes care team often joked that if I stopped exercising my blood glucose levels could be easier to manage. I now feel the best I have felt in a very long time and no longer dread getting my HbA1c done. I cannot thank Coach Bolton enough for all his hard work and effort he has put into creating this gem of a website.”
My diabetes care team often joked that if I stopped exercising my blood glucose levels could be easier to manage. Giving up exercising wasn’t an option for me, feeling frustrated at myself for not being able to control my blood glucose levels just made me feel like a hypocrite. After all, I am a health professional and my knowledge of diabetes should’ve made it easy for me to control, right?
In desperation I started researching the web for answers and I came across Coach Bolton’s site. The comprehensive information on the website helped me understand why I wasn’t conquering my battle with blood glucose control, not only did it explain why, it also gave me answers to plan my exercise better. With the knowledge I obtained from the website being much more in-depth than anything I learnt at university has allowed me to take exercising to whole other level. Last year I completed a 2 day 270km charity bike ride, I climbed Queensland highest mountain, Mt Bartle Frere and smashed my time on the run leg of my teams corporate triathlon. I never thought I’d be able to attempt let alone complete any of these challenges without my diabetes holding me back.
I now feel the best I have felt in a very long time and no longer dread getting my HbA1c done. I cannot thank Coach Bolton enough for all his hard work and effort he has put into creating this gem of a website. I recommend this website to any Type 1 customer in the Pharmacy as I know firsthand what a difference it can make. I’ve now set bigger goals for 2013; a 3-day charity bike ride from Townsville to Cairns, The Townsville Marathon and begin doing all three stages of a triathlon myself, all of which is possible thanks to Coach Bolton!
