Allan, I just want to say your site has been the best find ever! I’m extremely keen on sport and since developing Type 1 Diabetes 8 years ago I found it very hard to manage my sport / exercise. I exercise close to 5 times a week Soccer/Gym/Spin and found my levels were always hard to manage.
“When I found a link to your site I thought I’d give it a go, and Allan, it totally blew me away. Every question I want to know was here. How to prepare for sport?, How my muscles are effected during sport? and How glucose is taken in?. Thank you so much for all the work you’ve put in. You have changed my life for the better.”
When I found a link to your site; realitycheck.org.au I thought I’d give it a go, and Allan, it totally blew me away.
I lived in Sydney for 5 years and now Newcastle for the last 3 years, where I spoke to multiple diabetes educators and endo’s and attended multiple seminars held by the Australian Diabetes Council and although helpful, sadly the advice provided was never definitive - it was always based on trial and error. However, your site did that trial and error ground work for me. It taught me what I always wanted to know; how to eat before/during/after my exercise in a professional way, not just the basic fundamentals / textbook the educators teach. Your information was suitable for my high level of exercise. For example, during sport as I found myself always too high e.g half time in my soccer match, but your site information has greatly assisted me and helped better manage my levels.
When speaking to educators and nutritionists I felt their advice suitable for people with standard / common exercise regimes, not of those at a more intense level. I always found the advice of ‘undertake trial and error’ frustrating, because I wanted to go to these guys for help. I even bought the book - Diabetic Athlete’s Handbook thinking surely this is focused on sport, but to my dismay, I found the book useless.
When I found a link to your site; realitycheck.org.au I thought I’d give it a go, and Allan, it totally blew me away. Every question I want to know was here. How to prepare for sport?, How my muscles are effected during sport? and How glucose is taken in?. I was so excited I told the Diabetes education team in Newcastle JHH to try pass this on to others. This site would be excellent for parents whose kids have diabetes and are worried about them and sport.
I am very pro-active in my management and in my 8 years of research and education of managing my diabetes, this is the best source of information I’ve ever come across. You’ve even gone a step further and developed a glucose calculator for managing your levels using sports drinks etc. It’s awesome.
I do hope you can try and market your website better to all Australians with Type 1, as I said I was lucky to find this site, but so happy I did. Thank you so much for all the work you’ve put in.You have changed my life for the better.
