Erinn’s Goal: 60km fundraising walk. Previously, the only times Erinn exercised was when she would miss the bus and then have to walk home. But while working with community group she decided she wanted to help raise money for a charity, this involved a 2 day 60km walk.

Diana Vine and Erinn

Erinn – age 17 years T1D 6 years and Diana Vine CDE Regional South Australia

She went to see Diana Vine a Credentialed Diabetes Educator at Naracoorte, Regional SA – Pop. 5,000. Diana has 15 years experience in the community health setting and is an Accedited DAFNE educator.

Her first thoughts were, “This could be a recipe for disaster!!”

At the time Erinn’s management status was far from optimal. Diana reported Erinn struggles more than most teenagers with numerous social and emotional challenges while trying to complete her schooling and manage her diabetes. In the previous twelve months her HbA1c level was between 10-11% and this period included several hospital admissions - both DKA and hypoglycaemia.

Diabetes Educators get little or no training about exercising with type 1 and this part of regional South Australia doesn’t have its own Endocrinologist.

Thinking what to do… Diana and Erinn joined exT1D to work together and figure a plan.

Together they went through the e-coach modules. Diana said “I found the e-coach to be very helpful in expanding my understanding of diabetes and exercise. I was then able to use the Dashboard to help formulate a plan to help Erinn manage her BGLs over the 2 day walk.”

“Erinn chose her favourite sports drink and exercise snacks and with the help of the dashboard we worked out her estimated exercise carb requirements as well as an insulin adjustment algorithm and hypo treatment plan.”

Erinn achieved her walking target with no mishaps – WELL DONE!
