Mitchell’s mum Marguerite reports on his success

Allan, I have just calculated Mitchell’s excarbs on the dashboard for his tennis comp tomorrow night (76 grams carb). It suggests using a 50% basal for 8 hours which will cover 50 grams and Powerade will cover the remaining 26. I was intending on starting the temp basal @ 4pm when I collected him from school - we go from there straight to tennis - is that ok?

This is fine, all you can ever do with T1D is make practical choices i.e. 4 is better than 4:30 etc…

We’ve had lots of trouble trying to figure ways to avoid the up & down swings. Insights I gained from the e-coach really opened my eyes and helped me develop a plan that has worked… Thanks for your help!

Does Mitchell give a full bolus for his afternoon tea?

I usually give him an Up & Go drink which is 27 carbs? Or could that cover the extra 26 excarbs instead of Powerade?

If tennis starts in less than 3 hours after bolus some of the Up & Go could contribute by reducing the bolus. With these adjustments can I assume he will bolus normal for dinner?
In theory, yes but T1D likes to challenge theory. No measure is exact, you will still need to monitor his response. You will likely see a few transient elevated readings, be sure to see how he’s going before bed.

Allan, Mitchell took part in his tennis comp yesterday which went for 1 ½ hours and I wanted to let you know how he went:

Half bolused for his ‘Up & Go’ drink at afternoon tea. Before sport his BGL was 7.7mmol, we left his pump on at 50% basal rate for 8 hours.

Result was excellent – he was 9.1 at 1am, next week I will run his temp basal for 6 hours.
