Latin dancer Matthew Beattie beats Type 1 Diabetes blues & dances again

Allan Bolton’s e-Coach modules have made a world of difference for me. It really has been a case of “I wish I knew this information years ago!” I’ve lived with Type 1 diabetes for 30+ years and have experienced all matter of difficulties with managing exercise, BSL’s and insulin.

I love to dance, Latin dance and in the last two years I stopped all dancing and training after I could not find the right tools and advice to deal with my dilemma. A result of this action saw my social life become non existent and life with Type 1 had become very hard and depressing. If you’re not exercising you’re not socialising! I’ve started Latin dance training again. The results I’m achieving this time around are brilliant! Every type 1 diabetic should have this education.

Matthew Beattie

After 2 years of Type 1 disillusion Matthew Beattie finds the confidence to get back on the dance floor!

I’ve prevailed with Type1 from a young child (3 years) through to teenage years and now adulthood not having a well educated and comprehensive understanding of how exercise and Type 1 diabetes works. Why not? Simply because the expert advice and information is very specialised and isn’t easily accessible to most of the Type1 diabetes population. I use the latest pump and CGMS technology and am disciplined with my control. However, more recently in my life; the debilitating situation of erratic control and hypo unawareness has plagued me. My self esteem and confidence living with type1 diabetes really took a knock.

I love to dance, Latin dance and in the last two years I stopped all dancing and training after I could not find the right tools and advice to deal with my dilemma. A result of this action saw my social life become non existent and life with Type 1 had become very hard and depressing. If you’re not exercising you’re not socialising! After reading about Coach Bolton’s exT1D website in the Type1 Diabetes Network Yada Yada newsletter (sign up here) I signed up and was delighted to discover the wealth of information and first hand Type1 diabetes experience that Allan offers. It’s been truly inspirational for me and after completing all the e-coach modules, armed with solid knowledge I’ve started Latin dance training again. The results I’m achieving this time around are brilliant and I’m maintaining a consistent BSL throughout the dance session and the hours following it.

Allan offers valuable and motivational advice that can only be told by someone who has been there and done that. The animated graphics and quiz reviews of each e-module provide a learning experience that sticks with you. In fact, I was fascinated to learn how much I didn’t know about the science of type1 diabetes despite living with it all my life. One cannot get this kind of consolidated information from a one hour clinic with a Diabetes Educator or Endo Doctor. Learning life skills from a qualified and experienced Type 1 is the most convincing and trusted advice one can receive. Living with type1 diabetes is no walk in the park and when you want to do activities that push the envelope with blood sugar control, the risks and intensity of management increases. Having the knowledge and strategies to manage exercise makes it easier and ultimately safer and rewarding. Thank you for creating exT1D! Every type 1 diabetic should have this education.
